UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS
RESEARCH ASSISTANT/OFFICER
Closing date 17 February 2004
Reference 026031
Required immediately to work full time on an EPSRC funded project RETEMM
(REalworld Traffic Emissions Monitoring and Modelling) for a fixed term of two years in
the first instance. It is probable that this will be extended but this will depend on the
continued availability of funding. As part of a research team you will study the effect of
driver behaviour on pollution emissions. This innovative project will be truly
interdisciplinary and will involve using a fleet of four petrol and three diesel instrumented
vehicles to measure speed, acceleration, global position (with GPS), engine
temperature, fuel consumption etc simultaneously with exhaust emissions. You will be
expected to design the experimental procedures and the survey methodology before
conducting the data collection campaigns. The project will use state of art equipment
including highly sophisticated instrumented vehicle, in-vehicle fuel flow and mass based
emissions instrumentation, and a variety of ambient pollution monitoring equipment.
With a good first degree, in Engineering, Science or other numerate subject and
preferably a higher degree in a relevant discipline, you should have some research
experience in the areas of traffic, emissions and air pollution monitoring. An ability to
adopt a practical approach to troubleshoot and solve problems is essential, as is
experience of experimental design. An aptitude and interest in quantitative research
methods is desirable as is an enthusiasm to develop your research skills. Expertise in the
use of specialist instrumentation, in particular those used to monitor air pollution,
meteorological conditions and measurement of vehicle characteristics would be
preferred. You should be able to collect, process, manipulate and analyse data using
Word, Excel, and Statistical analysis packages. Good report writing skills are essential.
You should be willing to work flexibly and outdoors if required. A clean driving license
would be desirable.
The salary will depend on the qualifications and previous experience of the applicant but
will be on the R1B/R1A scale (£18,265 - £20311pa pay award pending).
