present a
Conference on Health and Medicine
in the Era of Lewis and Clark
November 4-6, 2004
This conference will be an element of the regional and national
commemoration of the two-hundredth anniversary of the Lewis and Clark
expedition. The keynote lecture, "In the Service of Science: Thomas
Jefferson in the Nation's Capital" will be delivered by Barbara Oberg,
editor of the Papers of Thomas Jefferson, and Professor of History at
Princeton University. Session topics include: theory (medical and
otherwise), materia medica, gender and Lewis & Clark, Enlightenment
medicine, health care without doctors, race and republicanism, mapping
bodies, and urban public health.
A banquet the opening night will honor Whitfield Bell, author of The
Colonial Physician and The College of Physicians of Philadelphia: A
Bicentennial History, and Librarian and Executive Director emeritus of
the American Philosophical Society. The conference program will include
a complimentary preview tour of the National Lewis & Clark Bicentennial
Exhibition at the Philadelphia's Academy of Natural Sciences.
This conference will be of interest to historians, physicians and the
general public and will result in a volume of collected papers to be
published by the American Philosophical Society.
