I´ve been tinkering with this for a few days. You will recognise it as dealing with the subject Helen used in a recent posting and also as addressing the question which came up in the subsequent discussion as to whether or not a dog could know it was going to be shot.
Like A Cat Among Pigeons
The dog that killed the lambs
and gutted their mother,
strewing the grass and ditch
with bladder and liver and part of her udder
stands now at the gate
with a doleful expression,
the living embodiment of `hang-dog´,
mixed with a mite of confusion.
Poor bowzer isn´t clear about this,
but there´s no mistaking
the change in his circumstances.
That tail between the leg´s not faking.
Poor old pooch doesn´t understand
what a gun is, but dumb
brutes sense human feelings
and this one knows his time has come.
