Beauty Is In…
If I don't remove the eyes first,
he eats them, along with the nose.
He knows they're an important part
of the face, somehow.
Blue, green, brown, dull or sparkly.
He nibbles the sockets clean.
He defends his right
to gnaw them out first,
second perhaps only to the throat,
shaken viciously. Neck snapped.
An impulse purchase
from the convenience store,
with a lottery ticket.
Stuffed top to bottom
with fluff and beans.
Buttons and velcro. And yet,
if I don't pluck the eyes out first,
the Chihuahua eats them,
along with the nose,
and thinks very little
about his savage appetite for plastic.
