Sorry for the 2nd post, but... two in one day is very rare!

Seeing Is Believing
If I don't remove the eyes first,
he eats them, along with the nose.
He knows they're an important part
of the face, somehow. If the thing
had every been alive, then dead,
he'd eat them. Fresh or shriveled.
Blue, green or brown. And
he'd lick the sockets clean.
He'd defend his right
to chew them out first,
second perhaps only to the throat,
by which the thing was killed.
Shaken viciously.
Neck snapped.
But the thing has never lived.
An impulse purchase
from the convenience store,
with a lottery ticket.
The thing is stuffed top to bottom
with fluff and beans.
Buttons and velcro. And yet,
if I don't pluck out the eyes first,
the Chihuahua eats them,
along with the nose, and thinks
very little about the victim
or his own savage appetite for plastic.
