The meaning would change, a lot, if borne became born;
and the repetition hoped to make it clear that it's
not another old woman. Yes, she meant borne here by
the sea.
As for the PS excerpt, i'm wavering. On another list
i've heard that the work stands alone without it,
which my ego likes, but also that it adds to or
invites a look an elemental level that is otherwise
vague and easy to miss but important[maybe not to the
work, but] to the writer. Stewing on it.
Question for you..or others. What are Chinese
whispers? love the sounds of the notion
