I read somewhere (Ezra Pound?) that you should always destroy favourite
lines in your own work.....but I just don't have the heart.
A couple of years ago on this forum or one line it, someone suggested major
changes to me. Not much left of my short poem except a couple of words. I
said whoa or something like that, and was told the poem would still be mine
if every word was different.
I don't know if it is heart or not. I believe a poet needs to retain
something of his own to feel the babe is his. If you set out with a goal in
mind, should the suggestion I or anyone else makes takes you in another
direction?
I'm not sure I agree with Pound if him. You should be willing to take the
paint off the kid, but destroy? Not at the expense of destroying your
vision.
