Yes, that's the place.

Basically, don't rush, take your time. A few extra seconds are neither here
nor there and can make all the difference between a good reading and a bad
one. People are there because they want to hear your poetry and it makes
sense to give your best. No-one will mind a few seconds wait and it looks
much more professional than a hurried disorganised gabbled performance.

Now just practice reading out loud, and NOT TOO FAST!

Best wishes
Roger

Thanks for that Roger. That's something else that I'm sure I'd have
overlooked in my nervousness and haste, and as I'm on the tall side, it
probably would have been a problem. I went to university in Newcastle and
went to a few local history lectures at the Lit and Phil. It's a lovely old
building, from what I remember, near the station. Or am I thinking of
somewhere else? I've been back too rarely since, and then usually for
training courses for work, so maybe my memory is playing tricks on me.

Matt,

The Lit&Phil in Newcastle don't have very large rooms but, having been to
Brian Lister's events before, there might be a microphone set up.

If there is, take your time to adjust the height of it before starting.
There is nothing worse than a poet hunched over a low mic. or stretching to
one that's too high. Brian, like me, is only a short person and tends to
set the mic too low for most people.

Roger

Dear Matt,

Congratulations on being in the Top 20.
I would have loved to be there for your reading and to have met you in
person, but I will be in West Cumbria that evening so it is impossible.

Best wishes and I hope it all goes well. The good advice obtained from the
list should help.

Roger.
