The most intimidating reading I ever did was before an audience of
professional Shakespearean actors. It was at a fund raiser for a group of apprentice
actors who were going to use the funds for tryouts in New York. The event was
held at Montgomery's lovely Shakespeare theater, and I stood in front of a
large (very large) statue of the Bard and faced that audience with my southeastern
Kentucky accent in full force. I am surprised I carried it off, but I did,
and I sold several books, the profits of which went to the apprentice actors.
I will never forget that night.
