>Holding the high-heeled scarlet shoe,
>she notices its arch in the air -
>engineered like a bridge
>across an ancient waterway.
>She hears the cries of river-men,
>smells the pitch. She plants her stilettos
>into a Chinese rug.

>A plump man fingers the coins
>in his pocket. confidently rubbing bronze
>and silver together as if preparing for street magic.
>The cards, all diamonds, are stacked
>in his briefcase. A watch moves
>across his left wrist.

>A teenager yanks a thread
>and the Spiderman yo-yo rises
>to his index finger and halts a moment
>until gravity seizes it. The boy's green gaze
>is fixed on a rooftop pigeon. He jerks
>the thread again. The bird lifts off.

>She picks out the ripest apples, turning them
>against her palm before sliding them
>into a brown paper bag. The crimson ghost
>of the fruit walks with her through
>the rain-washed market. Tarpaulins flap
>and glitter in the early morning light.
>
>It takes four attempts to fit the key
>into the lock. His hand shakes as he turns
>the door handle. A Queen Anne chair waits, sturdy
>as the past. A ginger cat strolls in from the kitchen,
>fat, but sucking in its cheeks as hungry toms do.
>Tin, tin it purrs, inscribing circles
>around his ankles.

>A small girl rolls a strand of auburn hair
>into a ringlet on her finger
>and reads about the Age of Exploration.
>She gazes at a picture of the Santa Maria,
>with Columbus, firm-lipped and fur-tippeted,
>at the wheel. She smells spice
>from chicken frying three floors above.
