In 1956, wildfires burned 5 million acres of Alaskan forest. 2004 will
exceed that record before the end of July.
After 6000 miles and 60 days
changes -
a road rerouted
a favorite restaurant changes names
a neighbor's fence painted
I missed the trees -
oak, maple, fir -
trees large enough to throw
shade over skyscrapers and shipyards
to climb
picnic
to build a cabin by the sea
instead drunken forest
spindly, nearly limbless trunks -
black spruce
with frozen roots
so shallow they topple without wind
to feed the fires
Changes -
a friend died
a stand of forest clearcut
a nest fell from a tree
*
1000 miles of smoke
from 110 miles south of Tok
to the Laird watershed
1000 miles of smoke
visibility less than ˝ mile
Mt. Logan, St Elias,
the Kluane glaciers missed
Fires burned along the road
through horse camps
and fishing lodges
as we drove the highway
behind pilot cars
We drive clear air through BC
to see a fire flair
across the Frasier south of Boston Bar
The smoke behind us.
Change ahead.
The heat index in Canada and across the Western states is at record highs.
The acres burn will break records outside of Alaska.
