Hi Gerald, Helen,
Yeh! I have an image of him on a train on his own, sat with hands in
pockets, chin on his chest, in a corner seat of a 2nd class compartment; an
aura of ‘do not disturb’ etched in the air around him. Or, when he’s
travelling with someone (any bloke he fancied!), being really animated and
whistling, then pausing to say, “and, while that’s going on, this is what
the cello plays!” When the conductor punched their tickets, and saw they
came from Oxford, he probably realised they weren’t the same as him and then
went on his way whistling some Gershwin to show he had taste, too!
But how fast was the train? I guess like today’s, rarely fast enough for the
timetable, or the passengers!
Bob
