The 15th European Conference on Machine Learning (ECML) and
the 8th European Conference on Principles and Practice of
Knowledge Discovery in Databases (PKDD) will be held
co-located in PISA, ITALY, September 20-24, 2004.

VENUE: The conference will be held at the university conference
center "Polo Didattico G. Carmignani", adjacent to Scuola Normale
Superiore, in the historical center of the town of Pisa
(Piazza dei Cavalieri). Blocks of rooms have been reserved at
various hotels, most at a walking distance from the conference site.
Please make your registration and hotel arrangements as early as
possible: hotel booking is available together with the online
registration procedure.

EARLY REGISTRATION: There is an early registration fee of 420 euros
that includes conference attendance, workshops and tutorials attendance,
Springer LNCS/LNAI proceedings of ECML and PKDD (2 separate volumes),
coffee breaks, a welcome party, an excursion to the historical town
of Lucca with associated conference banquet, a CD-ROM with workshops
proceedings and tutorial notes. The early registration deadline has
been fixed to JULY 31st.

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM

There is a wide WORKSHOP/TUTORIAL program, consisting of ten workshops,
the DISCOVERY CHALLENGE workshop, and seven tutorials, to be held on
Sunday 19 (afternoon), Monday 20 and Friday 24 September.

The ECML/PKDD MAIN PROGRAM starts with a plenary session on Monday 20
in the evening, and closes with another plenary session on Friday 24
September. 84 full papers have been accepted for presentation in the
technical sessions, while other 18 papers have accepted as posters,
and will be exhibited collectively in a poster session.
The program also comprises a DEMO SESSION, where 12 selected demonstrators
exhibit innovative applications or successful experiences/prototypes that
show the integration of new Data Mining and Machine Learning technologies.

   "Breaking through the syntax barrier: Searching with entities and relations"
-  Pedro Domingos (University of Washington, Seattle)
   "Real-world learning with Markov logic networks"
-  David J. Hand (Imperial College, London)
   "Strength in diversity: the advance of data analysis"

ECML/PKDD PROGRAM CHAIRS are Jean-Francois Boulicaut (INSA-Lyon, France),
Floriana Esposito (University of Bari, Italy), Fosca Giannotti (ISTI-CNR,
Pisa, Italy), and Dino Pedreschi (University of Pisa, Italy).
