One for the old(er) hands.
A few makefiles have a LIB_VERS value which is different from the
PKG_VERS value. However, I can't see anywhere this is used, other than
being edited into the dates file. There are at least some cases where
the PKG_VERS and LIB_VERS are substantially different (SLALIB was where
I noticed this, and it has 2.4-12 and 1.6 respectively).
The only exception I can find is gks, where the PKG_VERS variable has
a datestamp in it (and isn't otherwise used), and LIB_VERS is used for
all the visible versioning. This one, incidentally, appears to be the
only one where LIB_VERS is used within the final (static) library
filename.
Am I missing anything? If not, I propose dropping the distinction.
libtool can version libraries, so this can be added in the future if
it's felt necessary.
Any comments?
