just a note on the spm_defaults issue:

for some things, like statistics, it is NOT sufficient to run spm_defaults
itself. Instead, one should call
spm('defaults',modality)
where modality = 'fmri'; or modality = 'pet'; depending on your data to be
analysed. Only this way modality specific defaults like F thresholds are
set correctly.
