Following the Roberts Review the next RAE results, to be published in
December 2008, will use quality profiles to assess research. The quality
profiles will measure the different proportions of work in a submission
that reach each of four defined levels of quality. They will replace the
overall judgement of research for each department based on a seven point
grading scale used in the previous exercises. The new process aims to
recognise excellence in applied research, in new disciplines and in
fields crossing traditional discipline boundaries. From 2008 the funding
bodies will work on a six year cycle.
