Dear Colleague,
We are writing to ask whether you would be willing to spare ten
minutes to complete a questionnaire highlighting how your course team
supports first year students within Sociology, Anthropology, Politics,
Social Policy and Social work. Please go to the website:
http://extra.shu.ac.uk/lti-survey/kssocsci/support.htm. When you have
completed the questionnaire, press submit and your responses will be
sent directly to me.
We are hoping to talk to people responsible for first year students in
the Social Sciences. If this is not you, please could forward this
request to the appropriate people within your
department/school/faculty.
Higher education literature recognises the importance of the first
year experience for student retention, and the need to understand how
unsettling the transition from school to university can be. All
universities support their students in the first year, however the
support initiatives used differ between institutions.
This research aims to map the forms of support available nationally
within the Social Sciences. We are interested in how the specific
disciplines support learning and teaching amongst first year,
full-time undergraduate student. This research is being commissioned
by C-SAP, Centre for Sociology, Anthropology and Politics, part of the
Higher Education Academy, and will be carried out by the Sheffield
Hallam University's Learning and Teaching Institute.
Please could you respond by 21st December 2004.
Many thanks,
Karen Smith
