JOINING AND USING JISCMAIL LISTS: BASIC INFO
The Jiscmail lists for Russian Studies in UK and Europe are:
russian-lit
russian-studies
russian-teaching
east-west-research
qual-fsu
There are more specialised lists at www.jiscmail.ac.uk
For those who wish to join and use these lists, here is how
to do it. It could be worth saving this message.
1. You can join Jiscmail lists at website www.jiscmail.ac.uk
OR You can also join a list by sending the command (e.g.)
join russian-studies Andrew Jameson
to the Listserv [log in to unmask]
Write the command in the body of the message and put
nothing anywhere else.
2. Follow the instructions and you will be joined to the list.
To send a message to list members, address it to the
List address which is LISTNAME@ jiscmail.ac.uk (e.g.)
russian-studies@ jiscmail.ac.uk
3. Sometimes people decide NOT to receive the list messages
if they are busy or go on holiday. But you remain a member and
can post to the list any time you like.
4. To do this, send the command to the Listserv (for example)
set russian-studies nomail
When you want to resume mail, send the command
set russian-studies mail
5. When you post to the list, you may want to check that your
posting has been distributed. Send the command to the Listserv
set russian-studies ack
Each time you post you will get an acknowledgement, which by
the way also says how many members are on the list.
6. If you want to receive a copy of your own postings, send the
command to the Listserv
set russian-studies repro
and each time you will receive a copy of your own posting.
7. You can COMBINE these commands freely. To switch
these commands OFF, use the commands noack and
norepro. These stop the acknowledgement and own-posting
copy respectively.
8. So the command to the Listserv
set russian-studies ack norepro
means that each time you post you get an acknowledgement
but no copy of your own message.
9. And the command to the Listserv
set russian-studies noack repro
means that each time you post you will receive no
acknowledgement but you will receive a copy of your own
message.
10. To LEAVE a list, send the command to the Listserv
leave LISTNAME for example
leave russian-studies
11. To leave ALL the Jiscmail lists you are on, send the
command
leave * (leave/space/asterisk)
12. To suspend mail on all your Jiscmail lists, send the
command
set * nomail (set/space/asterisk/space/nomail)
13. To resume mail on all your Jiscmail lists, send the
command
set * mail (set/space/asterisk/space/mail)
14. If you're not bamboozled by all this already, there are
other useful commands. To get a list of these, send the
command
help
(Don't add an exclamation mark, computers don't do
jokes.)
All the best,
