The third annual meeting of the International Association for the History of
Transport, Traffic and Mobility will be held at the National Railway
Museum, located in the mediaeval-walled English city of York, 6-9 October
2005. The conference theme is tourism and the history of transport, traffic
and mobility, although proposals for papers on any aspect of the history of
transport broadly conceived will be welcome.
The opening address will be given by Professor David Nye of the University
of Warwick, UK. Professor Nye's extensive and much-lauded writings on the
cultural and social history of technology often address issues to do with
transport and mobility.
The conference, co-hosted by the Museum and the University of York's
Institute of Railway Studies & Transport History, follows on from the
successful meetings in Eindhoven (2003) and Dearborn (2004). Colin Divall,
head of the Institute and chair of the local organizing committee, said:
'I'm delighted that T2M has chosen York as the venue for its next meeting.
York is a very attractive city, and tourism an important part of the local
economy. It's easy to get to York by rail, road and air, and may even be
reached by boat for those who aren't in a hurry! Once there, all the major
facilties, including the National Railway Museum, are within walking
distance. All in all, a great fit for this meeting.'
Further details will be posted on the T2M website www.t2m.org and the IRS&TH
