The National Railway Museum in York is the largest Railway Museum in the
world and the most visited National Museum in England outside of London.
Telling the Railway story – from Rocket to Eurostar and beyond – the
collection features world famous locomotives such as Mallard and The
Flying Scotsman and thousands of interesting and historically important
artifacts. This vibrant and exciting attraction takes pride in its
object-rich, story led displays, exhibitions and special events and this
appointment will play a leading role as the Museum enters the next
exciting phase of its development.
Reporting to the Head of Museum you will be the creative force that
drives the organisation’s vision for the future, developing and
delivering exciting and stimulating attractions, exhibitions and
displays that engage the public and encourage interest, learning and
knowledge for everyone.
Taking specific responsibility for /‘flagship’/ major projects, you will
ensure that both cultural and infrastructure projects are delivered to
the highest standards within agreed timescales and budgets. Most
notably, this will include the redevelopment of the Museum’s main
exhibition area –The Great Hall, the development of a brand new Archive
Centre and the ongoing development of the Shildon Railway Village an
exciting new attraction in partnership with Sedgefield Borough Council.
With at least 7 years leadership experience in a museum or visitor
attraction environment, you will have a passion for communicating with
the public to educate, inform and entertain, and the ability to make
your vision a reality. Your exceptional project and people management
skills will enable you to effectively lead multi disciplinary teams and
work in partnership with a range of organisations to achieve your goals.

drive, enthusiasm and ambition to follow through with the implementation
of museum-wide strategies.
