Scotland: public awareness strand
Dear Alastair,
As European education manager for Bio-Rad I have a lot of contact with
Scottish science education initiatives which are promoting school and
college practical work in genetics and biotechnology. In my view Scotland
has achieved much in this area through a number of complementary projects.
Bio-Rad works with each of these initiatives to promote practical genetics
in schools through our Biotechnology Explorer Programme
(www.explorer.bio-rad.com). You will need to contact them directly to ask
them about funding and their levels of activity.
SAPS Biotechnology Scotland Project - a very active organisation which
organises numerous training courses
and summer schools on biotechnology/genetics/bioethics for students,
teachers and the public. The person to contact is Kath Crawford who is on

Scottish Institute for Biotech Education (SIBE) - also organises training
and develops genetics activities for groups
including teachers, students and the public. Based at Edinburgh University
and works closely with SAPS and other organisations. The person to contact
is Jan Barfoot who is on [log in to unmask]
Scottish Colleges Biotech Consortium - an extremely successful project which
has been running for
approximately 4 years to promote science education and develop links with
industry. Contact Susan Allen at Falkirk College for more information on

Good luck with your survey.
Best regards

Subject: [PSCI-COM] Review of genetics in relation to
healthcare in Scotland:
public awareness strand
Hello!
I hope some of you may be able to help us. I am undertaking a part-time
secondment to the Scottish Executive Health Department to help with a
review of genetics in relation to healthcare (see
http://www.scotland.gov.uk/News/Releases/2004/06/5668). As one of our
streams of work we are seeking to understand what
activities are currently under way in the area of public
involvement/public awareness/ communications/ outreach/public education in
genetics in Scotland.
In particular we are seeking to compile lists of:
* Those funded to do such work; and
* Funding streams being used to support such work
I wonder if you could help point me in the direction of databases or other
resources that might supply such information, or alternatively give me
some idea of
* Those you know to be particularly active in this field in Scotland; or
* Funding streams known to you
I need to have a first approximation to such a list by the end of this
month so all help cheerfully accepted!
best wishes,
alastair philp
