Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council, Swindon Office
PPARC funds UK research and training in astronomy, space science and
particle physics. The S&S programme's aims are to stimulate public
interest in PPARC research areas, to use the excitement of the science
and technology to engage young people, and to support & encourage
researchers to communicate more widely and discuss issues with
non-specialists. We are linking some of the most exciting UK science
and technology programmes to the school sector.
Duties include (a) running a programme linking PPARC science with the
formal education sector, (including liaison with teachers, curriculum
developers, the ASE, the BA, etc); managing a publishing programme
(popular and schools brochures, packs, CDs, posters etc); managing PPARC
presence at educational events; representing PPARC nationally to the
education and science centres sectors; and (b) assisting with the
runnning of the whole S&S programme, including funding schemes, liaison
with science centres and museums, policy advice, etc.
The appointment may be made at PPARC Band4 or Band3 level. Minimum
salary for these Bands is GBP20.7K/26.6K respectively. Starting salary
depends on qualifications and experience but will not exceed 25.9K/33.2K
respectively. Applicants should have a physical-science degree or
equivalent (ideal-physics), have strong interpersonal, communication and
team skills, and be able quickly to understand school science issues and
work with teachers, curriculum developers, and research scientists.
