Edinburgh and South East Scotland is the BA newest Branch. Help us grow by
joining us in our future programme. The subject line wasn't just to grab
your attention; our next event is about beer.

Bugs, Brews and Bevies: The science of beer
Part of National Science Week
Ever wondered how the pint at your local was made? Getting from grain to
glass requires plant scientists, microbiologists, biotechnologists, and
other specialists. Heriot-Watt University scientists will give an overview
of the science, a tour of their experimental brewing facility and an
opportunity to take part in a tasting panel.
Professor Graham Stewart is Director of the International Centre for Brewing
and Distilling (ICBD) at Heriot-Watt University leads this event on the
importance of science to the process of brewing.
Date & Time: Thursday 18th March 2004 Refreshments from 6:30pm talk begins
at 7pm.
Venue: Heriot Watt University, Riccarton, Edinburgh (You will be directed to
the lecture theatre from the main reception)
Cost: Free event
Open to: All, but pre-booking is required and age restrictions will apply to
the tastings
To Book Contact: Events Secretary, Edinburgh & South East Scotland BA Branch
0131 451 3072 / [log in to unmask]
Organisers: Heriot-Watt University (www.hw.ac.uk) and the BA
(www.the-ba.net)

In addition for those not yet old enough to appreciate the social benefits
of brewing you can
Join the Science Sleuth on a Forensic Investigation throughout National
Science Week.
Use science to find the buried skeleton, and identify which of the missing
persons the skeleton was.
A fun family event, working in groups.

Other upcoming BA events in Se Scotland include;

Gattaca: Screening of the film followed by discussion
An Edinburgh International Science Festival event
(www.sciencefestival.co.uk)
Every so often a film comes along that challenges our vision of the future.
Gattaca is one such film; in the future babies are designed and physical
perfection is the norm. Flawed specimens, 'in-valids', born the
old-fashioned way will form the new underclass. Vincent (Ethan Hawke), an
in-valid with a heart defect, uses blood, tissue and urine samples to assume
the identity of Jerome (Jude Law), to join the powerful Gattaca space
programme. The subterfuge is successful - until a murder draws unwelcome
scrutiny from the authorities.
The ideas in this thriller may not be as distant as you think. Come and see
this amazing film then put your views to the panel consisting of: Moyra
Forrest (University of Edinburgh), Ken McLeod (award-winning science-fiction
author), Shona Kerr (Western General Hospital) and Calum MacKellar
(Bioethics Europe).
Date & Time: Tuesday 6th April 2004. Film starts at 6:00pm
Venue: The Filmhouse, Lothian Road, Edinburgh
Cost: £ 4.50 (£ 3.00)
Open to: Film is certificate 15
To Book Contact: The Filmhouse Box Office, 0131 228 2688
Organisers: The BA (www.the-ba.net), Stevenson and Shepherd Science Events
and The Filmhouse (www.filmhousecinema.com)

(www.camera-obscura.co.uk), then a talk on Sir David Brewster (1781-1868),
inventor of the kaleidoscope.

Contact: Events Secretary, Edinburgh & South East Scotland BA Branch 0131
451 3072 / [log in to unmask]

recent engineering marvel (www.thefalkirkwheel.co.uk). Families welcome.
