Kevin - I had your message in the inbox and I keep meaning to reply...Phils response reminded me :-)
Tomorrow AM is my first lecture to the 2nd yrs at the start of their biomech course .... they get the standard routine (ie "half of what I am going to teach you this semester is wrong ..... problem is, I do not know which half it is!!!")
What they get on the MTJ is this:
1st yr:
Its structure is covered in anatomy. In first yr biomech they are introduced to the traditional 2 axes model as part of an explanation of how the foot could function. They also get to read and consider a conference paper by Anne-marie Keenan in which all old stuff and the more recent stuff is reviewed and the problematic nature about it ... (at this stage we are not really pushing them to reconcile the problems - its just raising awareness... they too green :-)
2nd yr:
In the biomech lectures they get from me we get on to Chris Nesters stuff and his research and review to build on the first yr stuff. AMK's review is also in this course manual. I also hammer into them the stuff from that paper of mine in JAPMA re the role of theory in understanding and how and why we still teach "convienent theoretical fictions" - at this stage we start to push them to reconcile the problems and differences (ie they are starting to become more critical thinkers)
There is a lot of sound educational theory that underpins the approach we take, as opposed to the didactic "this is the way it is" type approach..... thats the difference between and education and a training..
