David (Wylie) and others

I feel that I must respond to some of your points.

It is not my intention to abuse the mailbase or attack the SCP
in ‘spectacular fashion’ or personally abuse council members or wash dirty
linen or air personal grievances in public.

I asked a simple question at the beginning of the week regarding the SCP
Strategic Plan, a copy of which had been sent to me by their Chief
Executive. The question relates to one that I have been asking for three
years. Where are we going as a profession in the UK, and how are we going
to get there? It is what I would call the ‘professional narrative’ and in
my opinion, that is what is missing from the Strategic Plan.

I felt that it was an important matter for the profession to discuss, for
without narrative, the plan has no structure. It offers no [to borrow a
phrase] ‘road-map’ for professional direction. Instead we have a series of
[commendable] objectives which appear devoid of any common thread or goal.
My queries were not intended as criticism – to individual or organisation
they were aimed at obtaining clarification on what I believe are vital
issues at a difficult juncture in the profession’s history.

I am sorry that you feel that it is not important to debate this subject
and I am sad to note the comments regarding debate with practitioners who
do not hold membership. I had hoped, especially with all the talk of
unity, that debate would transcend these barriers for a change. Surely we
all have a common aim in mind? I rather liked Ralph’s musical analogy, but
conversely, if the band never plays, how does it hope to attract a
following in the first place?

I have sympathy with David [Holland] and Bill’s comments regarding this
site; especially so when the debate overheats with vitriol - much of it
this time coming in my direction. Like Ralph I am happy to go with a
consensus. But if we do debate, let us try and do so in an open,
constructive and courteous manner with respect for each other’s views.
Otherwise, let’s leave it alone. The profession is in a big enough mess
without entrenching the factionalism even more.

Sincerely

MR
