Professor Skitmore,
Thanks for your enquiry re PhD seminar attendance
Here in the School of Arts, Culture and Environment at the
University of Edinburgh, in Scotland seminar attendance by PhD
students has previously been voluntary.
This year a required research methods seminar course is being
introduced.
As in previous years, PhD students organise their own weekly
seminar series bringing in guest speakers from a variety of
disciplines from near and far. This is well attended by full time
PhD students, except possibly those in the final year who are more
stressed by the combination of write up and impecuniosity (a
particularly Scottish term!)
Examples of the callibre of seminar arranged by PhD students may be
viewed at:
http://www.ed.ac.uk/news/efusions.html
and the e-Fusions web site reached via the bottom of the page.
