EU Marie-Curie research position

The UFZ-Centre for Environmental Research Leipzig-Halle GmbH located in
Leipzig, Halle and Magdeburg is a member of the Helmholtz-Association (HGF).

The Department of Ecological Modelling and the Department of Economics at
the UFZ-Centre for Environmental Research in Leipzig, Germany cooperate in
the field of “ecological-economic modelling for biodiversity conservation”
and invite applications for an

EU Marie-Curie full-time research position for an operations researcher
(m/f).

The two departments are involved in various EU projects and frequently host
foreign researchers. The research fellow will be employed within an EU
Marie Curie training activity (“Transfer of Knowledge”) and will closely
collaborate with UFZ researchers and another Marie Curie fellow who will
work in the field of agricultural and forestry economics. The fellows will
work in a group that develops effective and efficient policy instruments
and strategies for the conservation of biodiversity in cultural landscapes
in Western/Central Europe and harvested tropical rainforests
(www.ufz.de/index.php?en=4308). In order to explore new areas a researcher
with good knowledge in spatial, dynamic and multi-objective optimisation
methods is sought. In line with the philosophy of EU’s Marie Curie
programme, the fellow will incorporate his or her knowledge and experience
into the group activities through particular case studies as well as learn
from the group about ecological-economic modelling and biodiversity
management. The development of own research initiatives is encouraged.

The ideal candidate will have
o PhD or 4 years research experience (full time equivalent; since
gaining university degree giving access to doctoral studies) in Operations
Research, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Economics or a related subject.
o Strong interest in optimisation methods, modelling and algorithm
development
o Excellent computer programming skills in either C++ or (preferably)
Pascal/Delphi
o Ability to work as part of an inter-disciplinary team
o Openness to the exchange and transfer of knowledge.

The fellowships will start as soon as possible and is terminated for two
years. The candidates have to be members of the EU or associated-state
nationals, except Germany. Remuneration will be provided according to the
EU regulations for Marie Curie Fellowships, and will amount to a gross
salary of at least 43,000 Euros per year, depending on the personal
situation (marital status) of the fellow. The salary will be supplemented
by an annual travel allowance for travels to the fellow's home country and
a career exploratory allowance of 2,000 Euros once.

Informations are available from:
Dr. Martin Drechsler, e-mail: [log in to unmask] (also use for
enquiries) or from the web site http://www.ufz.de.

Physically handicapped persons will be favoured if they are equally
qualified.
Women are explicitly encouraged to apply to increase their share in science
and research.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, Curriculum Vitae and list of
publications to the Centre for Environmental Research Leipzig-Halle (UFZ),
Department of Ecological Modelling, No 51/2004, P.O.Box 500135, 04301
Leipzig, Germany. Applications are welcome until the position is filled.
