You also need to check, with eyewash bottles, that the bottles don't disappear.
Our policy (mainly covering research & teaching laboratories) is to wash the eye using tap water. All labs have suitable sinks to hand with rubber tubing attached to the cold tap. The supply is reliably available & doesn't run out, microbiologically safe & flow can be easily controlled. Some worry about traces of chemicals on the tubing, although any contaminant will be washed off by running the tap for a few seconds (necessary to get the flow correct) before washing the eye.
Some labs are equipped with plumbed eye wash stations-a small shower head on a flexible hose. I am wary of them as I think there working pressure too high & whilst maybe not sufficient to cause damage, enough to make use very uncomfortable.

There is no problem at all with using eyewash bottles providing that they
are for single use only and that they contain at least 500mls. The small
steripod type bottles do not hold sufficient quantity. At least the content
of the bottles is sterile, which cannot be said for the sprays. The
disadvantage of course is that you have to check expiry dates and ensure
bottles are replaced after use.

Subject: eyewash
hello, I want to canvas opinion on the use of eyewash bottles as opposed to
eyewash stations.
I have heard from some people that eyewash bottles are not effective and
that eyewash sprays should be used.
I have also heard that eyewash sprays can damage the eye.
I would appreciate any comments.
thanks
