CA30 Sick Pay Manual for Employers (may have been updated now!)
The purpose of a Med 3 is to allow the person to claim Statutory Sick Pay
(SSP) and an employer does not have to operate the rules of the SSP Scheme
if they have their own occupational scheme)
Notifying Sickness
Notification is not evidence of incapacity it is simply the employee letting
the employer know they are sick and employers are permitted to make their
own rules about how they are notified, however for SSP purposes they cannot
insist that employees tell them, in person, on a special form or on a
medical certificate.
Evidence of Incapacity
An employer is entitled to ask for reasonable evidence of incapacity e.g a
self cert for 4-7 days absence and a Dr's statement after 7 days, employers
are not permitted to ask for a Drs statement for the first 7 days.
A Dr's statement is considered strong evidence of incapacity, but
certificates from non registered medical practitioners are also usually
accepted by the Dept of Social Security e.g osteopaths, chiropractors,
Christian Scientists, Herbailist and acupuncturists. 'It is for the employer
to decide whether the evidence provided is satisfactory whatever the
source.'

Does any one know the validity of sick certificates provided by osteopaths -
are these generally accepted?
