Dear All
The Employment Practices Data Protection code (part 4) which is still in
draft but should become practice soon is really useful in spelling out
the roles of OH and HR in the handling of sensitive information.
See draft on website below.

Subject: Re: pre-employment medicals
Hi Nicola, I currently tried this in the company I am with at present
and HR asked candidates to put their completed questionnaires in an
envelope marked confidential to be passed on to me. The questionairre
contained basic questions and yes no tick boxes and was also based on
risk assessment for the area. Also disability was covered. This appeared
to be going great guns as my current company has a terrific turnover
rate. However, the town I work in also has a high incidence of drug use
especially Heroin and of course you can guess what happenned. Do users
declare health problems or a disability in the sense they have a
"medical" condition which interferes with daily living activities (open
to debate here)? This week I went back to seeing everyone albeit for a
quick BP roll up the sleeves and check. This does not always of course
indicate what is happenning as some heavy users "clean up" prior to
getting a job for money and further supplies and inject in legs, groins
etc with the intention of "chipping" when money comes in. If a swollen
ankle doesn't give the person away then some still slip by the net. This
week 3 young people were picked up by the face to face approach even
with a quick check and at 15 minute intervals. Tough work but saves the
Drugs and Alchol testing which American companies sometimes demand for
Pre-Employment and the time this involves. I albeit grudgingly have gone
back to face to face. Perhaps also the fact that the Company also had a
medical centre with medications on site prior to my arrival also got out
on the local grapevine too? Nothing much in there but my experience
taught me that needles and syringes are always welcome and thank
goodness we have now moved to non-treatment. Just my 2 penneth for what
it is worth. Kind regards, Sue Mclaren http://www.ohnurse.co.uk
