point well made Sara and I have raised this at the committee and I think
you will see some opportunities this year to apply for funding. although
I should point out that this is normal practice cheers mairi

This is a frustrating issue and we as OH professionals must seem
ungrateful when there are events going on. Yes, Chris Packham talks
are
great and I imagine quite a few of us have attended his talks because
it
is a generic OH issue and they are keen to talk because they are also
pushing their products.

Maybe the answer is distance learning packages for specific work areas
which are central and kept bang up to date.

After working in the NHS and food industry I went to to work in a
higher
education establishment. I suddenly needed to know about student and
work placement issues, genetically modified organism work, overseas
work
and other areas.

It took a lot of searching, questioning to actually start getting that
knowledge base together and the frustrating thing is that I know in
another higher educational establishment a new OH professional will go
through exactly the same process as I have.

It is reassuring to know that it is possible to attend events without
paying, however I have not found that the case with the RCN OH
conference. After presenting work shops and concurrent sessions I have
still had to (or my employer) pay for everything.

This is of course why a recent event put on in Oxford at 6pm about
Occupational Dermatitis - Chris Packham spoke for an hour ( he was
wonderful everyone said) - was attended by only about 8 occupational
health nurses out of the 50 that attended despite the fact it was free
and included a free buffet supper. It was advertised on this site, and
for 2 months OH journal, in the RCN Bulletin and all Oxfordshire based
Society of OH RCN members received a personal postcard.

So - can anyone explain to me why when there are free events, and that
includes RCN Congress with 300 CPD events - still you say these
things?

Anne et al,

There certainly is a gap, but whilst in the generic nursing world you
could get masses of nurses wanting to attend a course on orthopaedic
rehab, you'd get very few who could attend a course relevant to the
chemical industry. Lots might want to go, as part of a broader
interest
but justifying the costs to our employers would be difficult and of
course the price would be higher for those attending given that there
are likely to be so few.

With kind regards,

In response to your query I also feel there is a problem, however I do
not feel the nursing profession can cope with the competencies
required
to work in any industry if it is chemical, commercial or any industry.
For example many times I have contacted the RCN for advice and
guidance
on a particular Occ health issue only to be told they do not have the
information I have also emailed requests and not had a replys.

I feel as do many others I have spoken to in our field that the way
forward is undertake the NEBOSH courses or business management courses
- IPD for example - psychology courses - disability awareness
courses
- and move forward from the nursing profession as they do not appear
to
currently recognise our skills or future needs.

We all make decisions for individuals futures and the only way we can
succeed is by updating our professional knowledge if our own
profession
cannot provide then we must look else where.

Dear All

There does seem to be a huge gap in accredited recognised courses once
you are qualified in OH other than going on to an MSc in OH or related
subject.

In other Nursing professions this does seem to be recognised and there
are many post grad courses depending on the area of specialism.

As we are aware an OH adviser working in a chemical industry
compared
to an OH adviser working in say commerce would have very different
competencies and core knowledge/skills although obviously the
frameworks
would be the same.

National recognised courses to give OH professionals further learning
opportunities in their own specialist areas would bring us in line
with
other medical/nursing professions.

Do others feel there is a gap?

Kind regards
Sara.

Dear Colleagues
We at the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen are very flattered by
Jay's comments, but we are at pains to emphasise that distance
learning
is not an easy option, and can be very isolating. However, distance
learning does suit some who have sufficient motivation and we both
provide and encourage support through various mechanisms, including
some
attendance periods.
Please note that the new BA Public Health Nursing (Occupational Health
Nursing) will commence in September 2004 and supersedes the existing
degree course. The course is subject to validation which is scheduled
to take place in May 2004. Details of our existing course may be found
by following the link below, but there will be some changes in the new
course; it will still be delivered by distance learning, but will
require three short periods of attendance within the first year, and
thereafter students will be encouraged to attend optional attendance
periods. Two modules will be shared with other community health
nursing
students, and will reflect an increased Public Health input.

We are also keen that prospective students choose our course after
considering all the options, and attached is the list of OH Courses in
the UK.

p.s the reason for avoiding naked cavorting is more to do with the
weather than Calvinism.

Hello James.

Personnaly I advocate the Robert Gordon University course in Aberdeen.
Yes I know it seems a long way off but the degree course is second to
none and believe me, I've been around. It is a distance learning
course
for which you don't have to attend all that often. They keep in close
touch by phone and e-mail. Their library is very accommodating and
they
also provide a close-to-home tutor. Unfortunately they don't provide
condoms or naked men but then the Calvanist influence is rather strong
in Scotland. What they do provide however is a course leading to a
degre to be proud of.

Incidentally I live in Lincolnshire and South Bank would have been
closer but then if you want quality.......

Hello Gill

The specialist practitioner qualification prepares practitioners for
initial practice as an OHN and this should be just one part of
continuing CPD.

The advice I give to our students is for them to to consider which
aspects of OH practice they particularly enjoy and wish to develop
further. For some it is taking on an MSc in Health and Safety, others
have continued by taking an MBA in order to develop within management.
I
have had at least three students who's CPD planning included
registering
for study at PhD level. One of them has been accepted to study as a
PhD
student at the University of Oxford researching a "health" related
discipline. (Needless to say I am delighted for her.)

My feeling is that leadership, management, health and safety,
ergonomics, environmental and disability issues would all be useful
aspects for CPD. It all depends what you want to do next.

Hope this is helpful

Anne Harriss
