Mike
My ideal course for OH CPD would run along the lines of clinical assessment
skills for:-
musculo-skeletal problems (backs and WRULD in particular)
spirometry and its interpretation
hand arm vibration assessment
audiometry
increased knowledge of clinical issues relating to pregnancy with
respect to work better assessment skills regarding mental health
issues
possible more knowledge on counselling and PEP for post needlestick
injuries.
Primary care can stay with the GP provider but the increasing time spent on
sickness absence, rehabilitation and supporting the self referrals is higher
priority to me at this time than maintaining skills on intubation and
advanced life support.
Naturally a current knowledge of first aid is useful but I feel that ideally
this should be a skill of society in general. If CPR is required it is the
person nearest who will be the most valuable if they are able to deliver the
goods.
Would you envisage OH departments to have stocks of IV fluids etc- I can
visualise the OH practitioners of the future still having glory holes to
clear out.
By the way my first OH job in this country led me to a supply of silver
polish. Apparently a previous post holder used to keep the nurse's buckle in
pristine condition.
