Hi,, how are they trying to "control" consultations - I make it quite
clear to reps who sit in on mine that I am assessing the employee and
will not be drawn into policy discussions. I direct everything to the
employee and very much treat the union rep as a witness not an active
participant.
OH's involvement with attendance and fitness to work issues is a new
concept to our unions. There is a lot of change in the work area and the
unions are finding it very difficult to cope. They cannot seem to get
their heads around the idea of an OHP providing the opinion on fitness
to work despite what the GP says. We're finding that they see us as a
management/HR tool and keep talking bout the OH sickness absence policy.
We're finding that consistent reports/opinions and restating that it is
not our policy, we do not apply it, we just give the opinion on health
is gradually beginning to gain their trust. In my old job I found that
going out and speaking to the Unions on modern OH issues/practice also
helped as many didn't really understand why treatment service and self
referral routes had been stopped! Be careful not to get drawn into
discussing individual cases tho!

Medical Consultations

Subject: Unions
I have been experiencing considerable difficulties with the Unions at my
place of work. Basically they have been trying to control medical
consultations with a view of controlling the outcomes. When they have
been
resisted or they do not like the outcomes, which actually have nothing
to
do with me, they take extreme measures.
Would others involved in Occ Health work like to share their experiences
with me and how they solved their problems.
Many thanks,
Dr. R.K. Lotay
