Can suggest that it is a good idea for us all to have a copy of the HSE
book :Safety Representatives and Safety Committees Regulations 1996:-its
about £6. This is particularly useful if you sit on a Safety Committee.
Synopsis from Amazon Books:
This is a revision of what is known as the "brown book". The text has been
revised to update the information in line with the Health and Safety
(Consultation With Employees) Regulations 1996. It contains codes of
practice and guidance on the Safety Representatives and Safety Committees
Regulations 1977. The booklet is aimed at employers, safety representatives
and trade unions, and seeks to explain how safety representatives are
appointed; set out their functions and their rights to time off with pay;
and give guidance on the operation of committees.
As an ex Safety Rep I know that Safety Reps have considerable powers: to
investigate RIDDOR reportable accident and industrial illnesses, see
statistics such as anonymous collective reports of health surveillance that
would not be available to an ordinary employee, conduct inspections
routinely and in relation to Reportable incidents I also know that these
powers are little understood by managers and possibly some in OH.
Best wishes,
Diane
