Dear James - Have you thought of retaining a specialist occupational
physician on an occasional consultancy basis to provide advice to this
doctor? Is there perhaps any underlying prickliness because (s)he is in
a different profession from you? I think there was a useful MDU
publication on making entries in any sort of clinical note, not
necessarily OH - you might ring the MDU. Failing to date and sign is
not acceptable - all competent doctors in all specialities accept this.
Non-specialist physicians in this department sign themselves off as
"Assistant Occupational Physician". Some other OH departments use
titles like "Medical Officer" or "Occupational Health Medical Officer".
The Dip Occ Med does not require any work experience at all in
Occupational Medicine. It was designed by the FOM as a qualification
for GPs with an interest - to help them in understanding the
occupational issues for their GP patients, or to prepare them for taking
on occasional sessional work in OHSs.
Hope this is helpful - I would be happy to talk this through with you
on the phone if you wanted to ring - 01865 282679.

I am having a problem with the doctor who helps me provide a service.
She is
a GP studying for the DOH. She refuses to sign or date her entry in the
OH
records.
Can anyone point me to the legal requirements for doctors to do this.
I
would particularly appreciate the advice of any OH Physicians.
On the issue of competence, would any OH Physicians in industry (not
the
NHS) give their opinion on the position of a doctor calling her/himself
an
OH Physician without having obtained any relevant qualifications?
Furthermore where does it leave the department? There is already a
credibility issue from unions and I just seek some specific advice. I
have
already been in touch with the FOM, who answered with particular
reference
to the NHS, an area I am not in.
With kind regards,
James
