Su,
Dont be Sorry!
We cover West Country Ambulance Service, who do have chemical suits but do not have medicals specifically for the task.
As regards BA users look at the Confined Space Regs which sets med standards of fitness, we use this on sewage workers etc who work in tunnels etc,
Otherwise all the different fire services have different medical standards for BA use but I believe that there is a physician working on a UK standard at present, could be worth pursuing it with your local fire service
regards

Subject: Re: Medicals for staff cleaning up chemical spillages
I'm starting to feel sorry I asked the question!!
If the staff are found to be unfit for any reason, then they would not be expected to go on a shout where chemicals were involved or if they had to, they would be made an extra etc. This is purely to establish whether there is likely to be a problem if they do need to wear the suits and BA, including when in training, which is our duty of care. To date none of our ambulance staff have had to wear the suits for a real situation, and we need to carry out an assessment of fitness, to rule out reasons that may make the wearing of such a suit unacceptable.
Until we have established what medical and health surveillance needs to be carried out we cannot move forward and we are attempting to be proactive!!

Interesting debate. Can I ask what would happen if an ambulance crew member
is found unfit to use BA?I presume all staff would have to undergo training
/medical prior to the introduction of full BA.
