I do not believe that OH staff should be providing a first aid service. Are
ALL OH staff fully trained in first aid?? I am a first aid assessor and we
often see trained nurses on our courses (they do not always perform the best
in assessment too I might add!)
Also - every workplace has a team of first aiders who are trained and
re-trained every 3 yrs (currently), so surely we should be trusting them to
carry out first aid treatment in the workplace - why train them if not??
I visit my workplaces on a part-time basis so if I was the first aid
provider then who would do it when I am not on site? If the first aiders do
not use their skills they lose them (as is apparent when they are on
refresher courses).
If we are effective OH staff then we do not have the time to deal with every
little injury that occurs. If on site I am always available for advice
should the first aiders require it but I never interfere when they have a
casualty in the first aid room - I wait for them to approach me, which isn't
very often.
I once worked at a factory where they were insistent that I should provide
first aid and the first aid team members always complained to me that they
felt useless and couldn't see the point of training. They also felt
de-skilled very shortly after refresher training because they were not using
their skills.
That same workplace would not discontinue the treatment service or the
wearing of uniform either, so I quit.
Hope that helps
Lynda

Do you mean just First Aid or do you mean administering medications for
headaches etc??

Subject: Research Proposal
Hi everyone
I was wondering if any of you can help me with my uni research proposal.
I'm in my first year of the degree and we have to submit a research
question and then work through the process -I think!
My proposed question is:
Should Occupational Health Nurses provide a reactive first aid treatment
service?
Do any of you have comments, ideas or know of any research that has been
done previously?
I would value any info I get back and following the debates of late I know
that there is a wealth of knowledge out there.
Many thanks
Julia
