There are no officially agreed job descriptions for OH within the NHS. The
reason for this, which was explained by Carol Bannister on the recent 1st
ANHONS Conference, is that there is too much diversity across the NH. The
RCN didn’t want to place OH nurses in the same dilemma as district nurses
have found themselves (i.e. they are all stuck in band 6, despite their
varying roles).
There are some profiles within the agenda for change document for
Specialist Nurse and Highly Specialist Nurse, which may help, but
basically the banding range for OH nurses could be between bands 6-8
depending on the results of local job evaluation. Job evaluation for non-
profile jobs (wthe bracket OH falls into) will take place at employer
level in partnership with staff representatives using an agreed national
protocol, so at least the jobs will have been fairly evaluated. At the
end of the day looking at other JD’s will help you a little, but they have
to be written in your Trust’s language / format and they will have to
reflect your role, not anyone else’s.
