Dear all
I have watched the conversations re recruitment and NMC with interest.
I suppose I am one of then people you might wish to recruit to your posts,
as I am currently"freelance" a nd self employed. Some would describe me as a
"Nurse Consultant" but I think of myself as a jobbing OHA.
My first Oh experiences were in the NHS- I would have been happy to stay but
I could not be sponsored to train. So i had to sort it out myself and got a
scholarship to study the M Med Sc (now MSc) in OH at the university of
Birmingham.Any loyalty I had for the NHS evaporated then,as they were not
willing to invest in me
my qualification is not registerable, and this does not appear to have made
any difference to non-NHS employers who recognize a master's degree for
what it is. i haven't ventured into the NHS to see if they would have found
it acceptable.. however the last consultant I worked for had the same M Med
Sc as me so i don't think he would have been worried, but the nurses might
be..
I think what would put me off working in the NHS again is the perceived
hospital hierarchy which have doctors ranking highly even in nurse led
services.. I am not anti doctor, I find their services very useful when I
need to reflect on an issue or get a diagnosis. For most other work they
are an expensive commodity ..(hello Alan, Kate, Steve, .. no offence
meant!!!!)
And now I have gotten used to having complete control over who I work for
and when, how many study days i attend(lots because i enjoy them and I am
happy to pay for them from my income). i can have as many days off as I can
afford, and i don't have to work around anyone else's annual leave etc..It
has to be a very tempting job to get me to be an employee again- and yes i
am currently actively considering a part time role , but working from home
doing case management- so no traveling....
I agree that a good idea is to have training posts, the support and
stimulation of having qualified people around to ask question of and give
guidance would have been much appreciated. I probably would have stayed in
the NHS....as it is a good employer and the variety of OH issue encountered
is wide..
best wishes to you all
Diane Romano-Woodward
