Robert hi
I must share your comments. Whilst I agree with James that a risk
assessment should be done, it can sometimes be difficult to risk assess and
unknown area (ie the persons home). I appreciate that other issues can be
considered as part of the assessment by the referring manager.
My first priority is for the nurses safety, but I also need to appreciate
that our clients do not always want to provide us with additional personnel
to accompany us on home visits.
As a matter of interest, I have not received one procedure regarding lone
working or home visits.......very interesting!!!!!!
As I said in my original querie, I do not want to get into a debate on who
should do home visits, as this is clearly not a routine OH function.
However, as a service provider, we are required to undertake home visits at
times and I was hoping for you kind folk to share your procedures. Anyway,
a huge thank you to those of you took the time to respond to my
querie................much appreciated
Regards
Donna

But James, a risk assessment would mean someone would have to pre-visit the
home of every employee due to be visited by OH to assess whether it would
be safe for the OH staff to visit. Not exactly a workable solution in my
mind.........

Like any other work issue, get a risk assessment done by a competent person
then follow to the letter the recommendations.

I do occassionnaly do home visits, each reason for a visit is assessed
individually and if I consider my safety is in question I either refuse to
do the visit or insist the employees manager also attends.

Subject: Home visits
Hi Folks
I appreciate and am aware that home visits are not a routine function of
OH and do not wish to start a debate on this issue. However, I would be
grateful if any of you out there could share any of your home visits
procedures with me or know of any health visitors/district nurses/GP's who
follow a specific procedure for home visits.
As an OH provider, we are asked on occasions to undertake home visits, and
are in the process or reviewing our procedure, taking into account both
staff safety and client need.
I look forward to hearing from you as always
Regards
Donna
