Thanks for your help Alan -the only problem for me with designing my own
training package is the time resource involved. I don't seem to have a lot
of it these days with workload problems. A ready made one costs I know but
Its the easier option.
Regards
Jill

Subject: Re: oxygen administration training
How about designing something yourself & saving over £200 for a few minutes
work. I think that there is really very little to teach.
Standard 1st aid training already covers recognition of illness/ situations
where giving oxygen whilst awaiting emergency service response will be
beneficial.
On top of this, all the first aider needs to be taught in addition is:
1. All standard 1st aid priorities still take priority (safety, ABC,
summoning help, bleeding etc)
2. Oxygen is useless if the person isn't breathing, so if the patient
is u/c check (& how to, is already taught.) If the person is conscious, then
not applicable.
3. Check cylinder isn't empty (look at gauge). Check tubing, mask &
listen for airflow when turned on.
4. How to put on a mask.
5. Continue to montitor patient whilst in use. If becoming distressed
when wearing mask, or loses concsiousness, remove mask & re-check ABC & flow
through mask. deal with identified problems, & then replace mask.
6. Worries about need to monitor for & recognise signs of CO2 retention
are unecessary in a first aid situation: the ambulance crew will arrive &
take over charge before it becomes an issue.
We cover this in about 10 minutes with first aiders.
What else needs covered?

Subject: oxygen administration training
does anyone know of any oxygen administration courses for first
aiders in
the form of a teaching pack? I would like to train our first aiders
on site
in the safe and correct use of oxygen. I gather that oxygen
administration
training does not need approval from the HSE as long as First Aiders
are
given appropriate training in the use of the equipment. I intend to
do
this
myself by means of a training package. Any help or advise would be
greatly
appreciated.
