Mike,
I wonder if you have been following the debate in the group recently about
the role of OH nurses in providing treatment services(or not). I await the
responses of my colleagues eagerly....
At present I am a self employed OHA doing ad hoc work(and there are a few of
us about) . A treatment room course would be of no interest to me in my
current role.
I have been working in OH for about 8 years in a variety of locations and I
can think of only one where these skill might be of use. That was a chemical
warehouse and manufacturing plant. I am aware that some large plants , such
as car manufacturers offer extensive treatment facilities and might be
interested in your courses. However many OHAs would leave the First Aid to
the First Aiders, and other treatments to A&E departments and GP practice
nurses (ear syringing is what I am thinking of here).
Certainly I would not advise OHA's to be involved with the removal of ocular
foreign bodies(except for dust or things that can be washed out using an
eyewash bottle.) I speak from experience having worked in an eye operating
theatre , and I have also written a chapter in an OH book on eye injuries.
The legal implications from doing something wrong and causing damage , or
missing an injury make it not worth the risk. Ship'em off to a hospital...
You may get a biased response from this particular JISC group because of the
type of person who joins..
Might be of interest to off shore OHAs- I am not sure what training they
undertake but I know it is extensive..
Good luck
Diane
PS What is an MIU nurse?
