What an interesting one...
i speak as one who has had an abdominoplasty on the NHS.. (although you
wouldn't know it to look at me now , but that's another medical story)
I think I only managed to swing it on the NHS because:
1) my GP asked me if I was expecting again, when I wasn't (big mistake, but
a logical conclusion in view of my shape)
2) I was an ex-operating theatre nurse and had scrubbed for the consultant
3) I think the Senior Registrar needed the practice
Other wise I would have had to go privately, and therefore by some people's
reckoning I would not have been entitled to sick leave.
I was at the time, working in a community college and there was not a
problem with sick leave of 3 weeks because clearly I was not fit to work.
I wonder if the same principles should apply to other "self inflicted"
conditions such as sporting injuries, skiing knees, falling off
bicycles(you may begin to recognize yourself here) or playing "chicken "
with cars when celebrating your birthday. (Well, the chap was only 19....)
and then we can get onto smoking related conditions...
realistically if the patient is not fit for work, they are not fit for work,
and a couple of weeks off for this reason, which may bring long term benefit
seem reasonable to me.
best wishes,
Diane R-W
