I always believed that 'head rests' in cars are actually head restraints
i.e. to support the neck in the event of accident. They are not designed as
'head rests' i.e. an ergonomic tool for supporting the neck and shoulders.
If you do need some kind of tool for ergonomic support in the car, I agree
with Craig that the Health & Safety Ergo Unit at Loughborough is a good
place to start, although I don't think that they have ever done any projects
on car seat design. They might be able to point you in the right direction
though.
