Dear Colleagues,
I have been tasked with the job of up-dating our OH practice on what
screening is necessary in order to establish a qualified nurse's fitness to
practice - both physically and mentally. Currently we see qualified nurses
post employment, unless the employer specifically asks for a pre-employment
due to sick-time etc. During the post employment screen we do immunities
and assess any health surveillance needs ie. glut./nitric. We do standard
height/weight/BP/urinalysis/eye-sight test and of course got them to fill
in a health questionnaire.
May I have your opinions, backed by firm data/guidance - or not!, on how
necessary it is to screen qualified nurses for fitness to practice and what
aspects of screening are necessary.
Whether it should be face-to-face or by paper screening; what are important
aspects of screening and what could be considered unnecessary nowadays?;
should any tests be used or do we rely on medical history from the nurse?;
do we need info. from a third party?.
I look forward, with anticipation, to your thoughts on this matter.
Thank you,
Lesley Baxter
