Subject: Director of the OHS - University of Oxford
Dear All - the advertisement below is in today's BMJ (by mistake in
"University & Research" rather than "Occupational Health") and on the
University website http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/ps/gp/current/http017.shtml
The successful candidate will be the first full-time Director of the
University's OHS. It has become necessary to make the post full-time
because of expansion in the role and activities of the OHS. Speaking as
the OHS's second Director, it is a very interesting job and an excellent
OHS!
And no ... I am not leaving Oxford - merely expanding my academic role.
This is necessary after success with research grant applications. And
after over 5 years as the Director of the OHS, it is time for a change.
In my academic role, I am looking forward to working with the new
Director.
Best wishes - Kate

We are seeking to appoint an experienced Occupational Physician as
Director of the University's Occupational Health Service. The
appointment will be in the highest of the University's academic-related
grades. The starting salary of the successful candidate will depend on
qualifications and experience. The OHS covers the occupational health
aspects of work carried out by staff, postgraduate students, some
undergraduates, and academic visitors. It provides advice to all levels
and sections of the University, including committees, people with
management responsibilities, and individuals, and also provides
services, under contract, to certain associated units and external
organisations. The University of Oxford offers a varied and stimulating
challenge from the occupational health perspective, covering health
issues which arise in a range of work environments including research
laboratories, libraries, museums, and administrative offices. The
service currently has physician input from three part-time clinicians as
well as from the Director, and in addition there is a Senior
Occupational Adviser/Operations Manager, three Occupational Nurse
Advisers, and three support staff. The successful applicant will be an
occupational physician on the specialist register in Occupational
Medicine, with experience of working in a range of organisations, an
interest in the occupational risks associated with research, and
experience in relevant areas, such as toxicology, respiratory medicine,
ergonomics, rheumatology, travel and/or infectious diseases. An up to
date knowledge of the relevant legislation is essential as are good
communication and influencing skills, demonstrable skills in managing a
team of professional and support staff, and an interest in developing
the service. MRCP would be an advantage, as would knowledge of the
applications of IT within occupational health services. Further
particulars of the post, and details of how to apply, may be obtained
from Melanie Holdak (Tel: 01865 270120; E-mail: [log in to unmask];
Website: http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/fp). The closing date for
applications is noon on 27 June 2004.
