I agree with Greta, I am an OHNA in the private sector and have had great support from the RCN. I have also set up a OH group sucessfully and it is registered with the RCN.

I am really interested in this comment about the RCN - as I worked for them for 12 years ( as if that has not been obvious from my earlier emails!) What help and support is not forthcoming to OH nurses from the RCN? It will depend on what you mean. The reason that the NHS staff get so much 'support' is that the NHS as a whole 'recognises' the RCN as one of the Trade Unions with which it has a 'recognition agreement' and therefore negotiates. If your company does not have the same type of agreement then the RCN can only advise you and give you external support for employment issues and matters.
However, it does offer a lot of support in other ways, free documents, leaflets and publications. Free access to about 10 online journals and free access to British Nursing Index (that only is worth about £180). If you are a member of the OH forum (Society of OH Nursing) you get a newsletter 4 times a year and you can lobby your regional representative to raise issues. You can also attend RCN Congress free and have access to nearly 300 CPD events - many on health & safety, counselling, stress, lifting and handling - and many more.
I recently tried to set up a local OH nurses group - which would have received support from the RCN - but only about 8 OH nurses replied/turned up despite my sending a personal postcard to all OH RCN members in the Oxfordshire area paid for by the RCN. Is this perhaps not apathy from the OH nurses rather than the RCN?
Mind you I agree with James - employers outside the NHS have hardly ever used the NHS as a yardstick for paying OH nurses more money or better conditions of employment. Rather they have used it to keep pay rates and conditions down to that level!!!

I couldn't agree more with your thoughts James - We have tried to get support and help through the RCN and in all cases this had met with a stonewall!

David,
Oh, it's all well & good the RCN saying A4C will apply to the private sector, but they are hardly the best advocates for OH staff in industry at the best of times. I'll be intrigued to know of employers in industry who will happily adopt A4C for their OH staff.
With kind regards,

Hi Folks
Whats your take on this agenda for change thing. I believe that the way things are going once (I say once as I don't believe it will not go ahead considering there is no back up plan) it is introduced, it looks increasingly likely that OH ans H&S job evaluations will be set at a local level.
I'd be interested in hearing opinions, even if it is just a soap box rant (if your not comfortable enough posting to the list I'd rather you emailed me direct than said nothing. I can always summarise things in a general post).
I would be very interested in hearing from anyone in one of the early implementer sites about their experiences.
Regards
Craig
