Venues, Channels, and Networks: New Media Artists and the Market

Much like early video art, new media art struggles for a presence in
the "art world" even as its practitioners explore alternative venues,
distribution channels, and networks. A panel of artists, curators,
gallerists, and cultural and market observers will examine the
effects and disaffections of new media art and the art market.
If you find that you can't stop making new media art but have no idea
how to survive professionally as a "new media artist," or
(especially) if you have knowledge of how to survive and are prepared
to share it, this panel can provide you with a snapshot of where new
media art is exhibited and how its practitioners and consumers come
to terms with its positioning as a marketable commodity.
Panelists:
Shawn Decker teaches in the Department of Art and Technology at the
School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He exhibits his sound
installations internationally. Shawn was Co-Chair of the
International Symposium on Electronic Art, held in Chicago in 1997.
Paul Hertz (panel moderator) is a new media artist and currently
Co-Director of the Center for Art and Technology at Northwestern
University.
Rob Kozinets is an ethnographer and videographer who has studied and
documented phenomenon such as Star Trek fandom, Culture Jamming, ESPN
Zone and American Girl themed brandstores, and the Burning Man
festival. He teaches Marketing in the Kellogg School at Northwestern
University.
Rob Ray is an electronic media artist and one of the founders of
Deadtech, an alternative venue for new media art located in the Logan
Square neighborhood of Chicago (see http://deadtech.net/).
Lanny Silverman is Associate Curator of Visual Arts for the City of
Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs. He has been a champion of new
music and new media. In a previous life, he directed one of Chicago's
historic alternative venues, N.A.M.E., an artists' cooperative.
Debora Wood is Senior Curator at the Block Museum at Northwestern
University, and also a printmaker and teacher. She has been
instrumental in bringing new media art works to the Block Museum.
