Dear List,
Thanks to Drew and Naomi for their time-shifting references to "The
Walkman Effect" and other historical echoes. I'm also struck by how
the ears are perhaps more timeless and more intimate than the eyes, a
factor which Janet Cardiff has used to amazing effect, often using
popular technology such as walkmans or video cameras (The Telephone
Call, 2001, which was shown as part of 010101 at SFMOMA). Such
old/new technology can 'make strange' the world, even within the
unpromising location of an art institution.
I'd like to encourage people to carry on the Locative theme as they
wish, not least because Mute have asked me to do a short piece on the
subject, including this debate, so any gems you wish to share before
the end of the week might meet print deadlines.
Yours,
Beryl
