Hi crumb
Given some of the questions that arose after our panel at ISEA 2004
yesterday, i wanted to point you to an event i've co-organised that is
taking place in September in Sunderland. This panel will address some
of the particularities of curating time-based art and media art in and
out of gallery contexts.
hope you can come,
cheers,
Sarah

Critical conversation: Curating in space and time
Tuesday 7 September, 6.30-8.30pm (drinks available from 6pm)
NGCA, City Library and Arts Centre, Fawcett Street, Sunderland
This event brings together four established UK and international
curators who work in and out of gallery settings, to investigate the
relationships between curatorial practice, architectural space and
audiences. Drawing on their experiences of curating live, performative,
time-based events, off-site projects and networked new media, the
curators question how the space where art is exhibited affects the
exhibition outcome. From the mountain retreat to the nightclub, this
conversation seeks to illuminate the characteristics of the varied
spaces and times in which art is sited.
Anthony Kiendl, Director Visual Arts and Walter Phillips Gallery, The
Banff Centre, Canada will speak about his recent interest in informal
architecture: a topic on which he will be addressing the symposium
‘Conceptions of Space: Architecture and Curating’ at Tate Modern on 11
September 2004.
Candice Hopkins, Aboriginal Curatorial Resident, Walter Phillips
Gallery, Banff, Canada will speak about her work with pirate radio,
performance art, new media in local communities, and her recent
curatorial project, the exhibition ‘A Question of Place’, which asked
if you can ever truly regain your place in the world once it has been
lost.
Vivienne Gaskin, Director of Performing Arts and Digital Media at the
ICA, London will discuss her involvement in the areas of 'social
curating' in her creation of the club-night programme at the ICA, and
on curating visual artists in a live context, with specific focus on
her development of cultural re-enactment and the challenges surrounding
the introduction of the digital into the live arena.
Kathy Rae Huffman, Director of Visual Arts. Cornerhouse, Manchester
will speak about recent curatorial work at Cornerhouse, the
relationship of audiences to gallery exhibitions, and about how to (and
why to) integrate digital and new media projects into a contemporary
art programme.
Chaired by Rob Blackson, Curator, Reg Vardy Gallery, University of
Sunderland and Sarah Cook, curator and co-editor, CRUMB, University of
Sunderland.
Organised by Rob Blackson and Sarah Cook in partnership with a-n The
Artists Information Company and the Northern Gallery for Contemporary
Art Sunderland, the event is supported by Arts Council England and ESF.
